Ninety students in grades 6 through 12 competed in the first Mundelein Mayor’s Cup Math Challenge over the weekend. A handful of students represented Fremont Middle School, which placed first in the middle school competition against 11 teams. In the individual competition, eighth grader Nicholas Baginski, placed second. Cash prizes were awarded for placing in the top three of a given category. Students who helped Fremont place first in the competition included Scott Haseman, 14, Joe Dolf, 12, Abbie Lukas, 14, and Sommer Ray, 13 Ryann Ray, 12, and Nicholas Baginski, 14. Math teacher Doug Knox sponsored the team.
Fremont Middle School's MathCounts club competed recently at the College of Lake County. Twenty schools competed. MathCounts is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement. Students who competed were Scott Haseman, Ryan Ray, Abbie Lukas and Nicholas Baginski. MathCounts coach is Doug Knox. The math team is scheduled to compete at Mundelein High School and Stevenson in the near future.
